Accessible Wet Room Design and Installation
A wet room works or fails below the finish you can see. We check the joists, floor falls, drainage route, ventilation and waterproofing first, then build level-access rooms that are practical for anyone with reduced mobility without feeling like a hospital.
Who a wet room suits
Many of the wet rooms we plan are for people who find stepping into a bath or over a shower tray difficult, now or in the future. Accessible layouts can include level entry, support positions, seating and easy-clean choices, while keeping enough transfer space for the person using the room.
What we check before design
The structure decides what is possible, so it is assessed before the layout is fixed:
- Joist direction and floor structure, which set former depth and falls
- A viable drainage route with enough fall
- Ventilation sized for moisture and the external route available
- Movement space for the user
Waterproofing done properly
The whole wet zone is tanked, with corners and pipe penetrations sealed, so the structure behind the tiles is protected. Falls, former, tanking and finish junctions are all specified before work starts.
One team, one sequence
Plumbing, tanking, electrical zones and finishes are coordinated as one programme, from strip-out and first fix through to waterproofing and final finishes. You are not left chasing separate trades. At handover, drainage, seals and controls are checked and the room is cleaned down.
Planning ahead
If you are planning for future needs rather than an immediate one, it is worth building in the options now. Level entry, space for a seat and reinforced areas for supports can be designed in from the start, so the room can adapt later without being ripped out. We talk through who will use the room and how, then design around that. Easy-clean surfaces, non-slip finishes and good ventilation make the room easier to live with day to day, which matters as much as the layout. We also check how the door opens and whether a wheelchair or walking frame can turn comfortably inside.
Upstairs wet rooms
These are possible when joists, deflection, former depth and waste fall are assessed first. If a walk-in shower would do the job, our shower installations page covers that simpler option. We are based in Kelso and fit wet rooms across the Scottish Borders and East Lothian.
Wet Room Installations questions
Can a wet room be fitted upstairs?
Yes, when joists, deflection, former depth and waste fall are assessed before the layout is fixed.
How is leakage prevented?
A continuous tanking system, sealed penetrations and tested drainage protect the structure behind the finish.
Does an accessible wet room need to look clinical?
No. Support, seating and level access can be integrated into a warm residential design.
Do you handle the electrics and tiling too?
Yes. Plumbing, tanking, electrical zones and finishes are coordinated through one project sequence.
Can supports be added later?
Accessible layouts can keep future support options open, which we plan at the design stage.
Can a wet room be designed for future needs?
Yes. Level entry, space for a seat and reinforced areas for supports can be built in from the start, so the room adapts later without being ripped out.
