Central Heating Power Flushing in the Scottish Borders

A power flush is worth doing when dirty system water is the real cause of cold radiator panels, noisy circulation or repeated pump failures. We test the system before recommending one, because a closed valve, an air lock, poor balancing or an undersized pump can produce the same symptoms and cost far less to put right.

Signs your heating may need flushing

Sludge builds up slowly, so most households notice the effects before they notice the cause. The patterns that point towards contaminated water are fairly consistent:

  • Radiators hot at the top but cold across the lower panel
  • Dark, discoloured water when a radiator is bled
  • A pump that has failed more than once, or a boiler that kettles
  • Rooms that take far longer to heat than they used to

Why we test before we flush

We would rather not sell you a flush you do not need. A visit starts with the system water, radiator temperatures and circulation symptoms. Sampling the water separates corrosion debris from a simple balancing fault, and checking valves and pump speed rules out the cheaper explanations first.

If cleaning is justified, you get a clear scope before any chargeable work begins. If it is not, we tell you what the fault actually is and whether we can fix it on the same visit.

How the flush is carried out

The boiler and vulnerable controls are protected before cleaning begins. We then work through the house one radiator at a time, agitating and flushing each until the discharge runs clear, rather than relying on one high-flow pass through the whole circuit. Magnetic capture protects the boiler while loosened iron oxide is removed.

Once the water is clean, inhibitor is added, pressure is restored and the radiators are balanced at operating temperature. Final flow and return readings are recorded so you can see the difference, not just take our word for it. Most domestic systems are finished within a working day; larger or badly contaminated circuits take longer.

What a flush cannot do

Flushing removes debris from the circulation, but it cannot restore metal that corrosion has already weakened. If a radiator is pinholing or a valve is seized, we flag it as a part needing replacement rather than hoping the flush will cure it. If your radiators need changing anyway, our radiator replacement page covers how we size new ones.

Keeping the system clean afterwards

Correct inhibitor levels and a magnetic filter help stop sludge returning. If your boiler is due a service, we can check the system water at the same time, so any new debris is caught early rather than after another pump fails.

Where we work

We are based in Kelso and carry out power flushing across the Scottish Borders and East Lothian. Every job is quoted clearly before we start.

Power Flushing questions

Does every cold radiator need a power flush?

No. A closed valve, air lock or poor balance can look similar, so diagnosis comes first and we only recommend a flush when the system water justifies it.

Will flushing repair a leaking radiator?

No. It removes circulation debris but cannot restore metal already weakened by corrosion. We flag any parts that need replacing.

How long is the heating off?

Most domestic systems are cleaned within a working day. Larger or badly contaminated circuits take longer, and we tell you in advance.

Is it safe for my boiler?

Yes. The boiler is protected before cleaning, we use methods suited to the installed system, and magnetic capture collects loosened debris.

What happens after the flush?

Inhibitor is added, pressure is restored and every radiator is balanced, with temperature and circulation checks recorded at handover.
