Oil Boiler Replacement and New Oil Boiler Installation

If your oil boiler is old, unreliable or costly to run, an oil boiler replacement with a modern condensing model is often the simplest upgrade for an off-gas rural home, because it keeps your existing tank, fuel supplier and radiators. We check the tank, the flue route and the heating system before quoting, and we will also tell you honestly whether a heat pump would suit the house better.

Why replace an older oil boiler

Older non-condensing oil boilers send a lot of heat straight out of the flue. A condensing boiler recovers much of that heat before it leaves, so the same amount of oil goes further. Replacement also makes sense when a boiler keeps breaking down, when parts are becoming hard to find, or when it no longer keeps up with the house in a cold spell.

Many rural Borders homes are some distance from the gas network, so oil remains the practical fuel for a lot of farmhouses, cottages and older stone properties. A new boiler can be fitted with minimal change to the rest of the system when the pipework and radiators are in reasonable condition.

Internal or external oil boiler

Oil boilers come as internal units, which sit in a kitchen, utility room or boiler house, and external units, which are weatherproof cabinets mounted outside. An external boiler frees indoor space and keeps the burner and its noise outside, which some households prefer. An internal boiler is easier to reach for maintenance in bad weather and keeps the appliance out of the elements.

Moving from an internal to an external unit is often possible. We look at the route for the flow and return pipes, the oil line and the condensate, and where the flue can discharge, before recommending either.

Flue, plume and condensate

Condensing boilers produce a visible plume of water vapour and a steady flow of slightly acidic condensate. The flue terminal has to sit well clear of windows, doors and neighbouring property, and the plume should not drift where it causes a nuisance. The condensate pipe needs a sensible route and protection from frost, which matters on exposed rural sites. We plan all three on the survey.

Checking the oil tank first

A new boiler is only as reliable as the fuel reaching it. Before fitting, we inspect the visible condition of the tank, its base and the supply line, and look at the filter and fire valve. If the tank shows signs that it needs attention, we tell you before the boiler goes in so you can arrange it separately, rather than connecting a new appliance to a supply that could let it down.

  • Visible condition of the tank, bund and base
  • Oil line route, filter and fire valve
  • Signs of water or sludge in the fuel
  • Controls and thermostat to go with the new boiler

Oil boiler or heat pump?

For some homes, replacing oil with an air source heat pump is the better long-term move, particularly where insulation is reasonable and radiators can be sized to suit. For others, especially draughty older houses with small radiators, a new oil boiler is the more practical option for now. Our oil to heat pump page and our guide to oil heating in rural Borders homes help you weigh it up, and we can survey for either.

We cover Kelso, the Scottish Borders and East Lothian.

Oil Boiler Installation questions

How long does an oil boiler last?

It depends on the model, how well it has been serviced and the quality of the fuel supply. Regular servicing extends its life; repeated breakdowns and hard-to-find parts are the usual signs that replacement is worth planning.

Should I replace my oil boiler or switch to a heat pump?

It depends on the house. Insulation, radiator sizes and space for a hot-water cylinder all matter. We can survey for both and explain which suits your home.

Can an external oil boiler replace an indoor one?

Often, yes. We check the pipe routes, oil line, condensate and flue position to confirm it can be done neatly before quoting.

Do I need a new oil tank with a new boiler?

Not necessarily. We check the visible condition of your tank and supply line before fitting and tell you if anything needs attention first.
