A single fault on an otherwise healthy boiler is normally a repair. The picture changes when the same unit has needed several call-outs, when the manufacturer has stopped supplying parts, or when a major component such as the heat exchanger has failed. At that point money spent on the old boiler rarely comes back. Older non-condensing boilers also waste more of the fuel they burn than modern condensing models, so a swap can improve comfort as well as reliability. Many replacements are straight swaps, but it is the right moment to ask whether the old layout still suits the house. A combi heats water on demand and frees up the airing cupboard and loft; a system boiler with a cylinder copes better where two showers run together. Mains water flow, the number of bathrooms and how the household uses hot water all feed into that choice, and we measure them at the survey rather than guess.
