Fault diagnosis

Vaillant fault codes: reading the F number on your display

Written for Vaillant owners with an F code or a warning on the display who want to understand it before deciding what to do.

Vaillant boilers report faults as F codes, and the number tells an engineer a great deal. Some F codes describe a condition you can put right yourself in ten minutes. Others describe a safety trip that should not be reset until someone has looked at the appliance. Knowing which is which is the whole point of this guide.

We install and service Vaillant equipment, including air source heat pumps, so these codes are familiar territory. What follows explains the main groups of code, the safe homeowner checks, and the reasons why pressing reset repeatedly is a false economy.

Note the code exactly, and note the pattern

Write down the F number precisely, plus anything else on the display such as a pressure figure or a service reminder. Then note the timing. Codes that appear the moment the boiler tries to fire behave differently from codes that show up hours later, and that difference often decides whether the fault is a component or a slow condition like falling pressure.

If the display shows a low pressure symbol or reading rather than an F code, treat it as a pressure problem first. Vaillant units generally refuse to fire below a safe minimum, which is protective rather than faulty behaviour.

The main groups of Vaillant code

Low F numbers commonly cover water side conditions such as temperature sensors, overheating and flow. The middle range tends to cover ignition, flame detection and gas valve conditions. Higher numbers frequently cover communications between components and controls, along with fan and flue conditions. Your specific model manual is the authority for the exact number.

The practical takeaway is the same across the range. Water side and pressure conditions sometimes have a homeowner fix. Ignition, flame and flue conditions do not, because they sit inside the sealed combustion side of the appliance.

Homeowner checks worth making before you call

  • Check the pressure gauge or display reading with the system cold.
  • Check the room thermostat and programmer, including batteries and pairing.
  • In frosty weather, look for ice in the external condensate pipe.
  • Confirm the gas hob lights, which separates a supply issue from a boiler issue.
  • Reset once, then record whether the code returns straight away or later.

Frozen condensate: the code that fixes itself every winter

A large share of winter Vaillant callouts across rural Borders properties come down to a frozen condensate pipe. The boiler cannot discharge its acidic waste water, senses the blockage and shuts down. Thawing the external pipe carefully with warm, not boiling, water and then resetting once will often restore normal operation immediately.

If it happens more than once, the pipe run itself is the problem rather than the weather. Increasing the pipe diameter externally, shortening the outdoor run, insulating it properly or rerouting it internally are all permanent fixes worth doing before the next cold spell.

When it becomes a Gas Safe job

  • The code returns immediately after a single reset.
  • The code relates to ignition, flame detection, fan or flue.
  • Pressure will not hold after topping up, which means a leak or an expansion vessel fault.
  • The boiler locks out repeatedly across a day even while apparently running.
  • You smell gas at any point, in which case ventilate, turn off at the meter and call 0800 111 999.

Frequently asked questions

What does an F code on a Vaillant boiler mean?
It identifies the condition the boiler detected before shutting down, such as low pressure, overheating, no flame, or a fan or flue problem. The number narrows it precisely, which is why writing it down before resetting is the single most useful thing you can do.
Can I reset a Vaillant fault code myself?
One reset is reasonable to see whether the fault was transient. If the same code returns immediately, stop resetting and book a Gas Safe registered engineer, because repeated attempts on ignition or overheat faults can cause further damage.
My Vaillant shows low pressure. Is that a fault?
It is usually the boiler protecting itself rather than a component failure. Top the system up to around 1.2 bar cold if your manual explains how. If pressure keeps falling, there is a leak or an expansion vessel problem behind it.
Why does my Vaillant keep faulting in cold weather only?
That pattern nearly always means a frozen condensate pipe. Thaw the external pipe with warm water and reset once. If it recurs each winter, the pipe run needs improving with a larger diameter, insulation or an internal route.
Do you work on Vaillant boilers and heat pumps?
Yes. We install and service Vaillant equipment, including air source heat pumps, across Kelso, the Scottish Borders and East Lothian. Send us the model and the exact code when you enquire.
