Heat pump pricing is not comparable to boiler pricing, because a heat pump project is a whole-system change rather than an appliance swap. The unit is only part of it: emitter sizing, cylinder specification, controls and pipework capacity all have to suit a lower flow temperature.
In Scotland, Home Energy Scotland grant and interest-free loan funding changes the arithmetic significantly, and the funded route requires MCS-certified installation.

Grant and loan funding in Scotland
Home Energy Scotland offers grant funding for renewable heating, with additional interest-free loan funding available on top for eligible households — with grant values for heat pumps currently up to £7,500 and a rural uplift available in eligible areas. Funding must be approved before work begins, and the installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer under the RECC consumer code.

Running costs, honestly
A heat pump's running cost depends on its seasonal efficiency and the electricity tariff. Against oil or LPG in a well-insulated property with correctly sized emitters, the economics can be strong. Against mains gas in a poorly insulated house with undersized radiators, they may not be — and we will say so at survey rather than after installation.
The single biggest determinant is flow temperature: a system designed to run at 45°C behaves very differently from one forced to 55°C by undersized radiators.
Where a heat pump makes most sense locally
- Properties currently on oil or LPG with no mains gas prospect.
- Houses with, or willing to fit, larger radiators or underfloor heating.
- Homes with reasonable insulation, or an insulation upgrade planned alongside.
- Owners with space for an outdoor unit that respects boundary and noise considerations.

- Do I have to replace all my radiators?
- Not usually all of them. A heat loss calculation identifies which rooms have insufficient emitter output at the design flow temperature. Often it is a handful of rooms rather than the whole house.
- Can I get the grant and the loan together?
- Eligible households in Scotland can typically combine grant funding with interest-free loan funding for the balance. Approval must be in place before work starts, so plan the application into the timeline.
- Is planning permission needed?
- Many domestic installations fall within permitted development, but siting, boundary distances, noise and listed or conservation status can change that. We check this as part of the survey rather than assuming.
- Will a heat pump heat my hot water to a safe temperature?
- Yes — via a correctly specified cylinder with a periodic higher-temperature cycle for Legionella protection. Cylinder specification matters more on a heat pump than on a boiler.
