Hive Thermostat Installation and Replacement

We fit and replace Hive thermostats after checking the boiler, existing wiring and the heating controls already in place. A successful installation needs more than a thermostat connected to an app: the receiver must suit the system, heating demands must reach the boiler correctly, and any stored hot water must remain properly controlled. We can also investigate an existing Hive installation that has stopped responding, without assuming that every connection problem needs new equipment.

Check compatibility before buying

Send us the boiler make and model, photographs of the existing programmer and thermostat, and details of any hot water cylinder. These help establish whether you need heating-only control or separate heating and hot water channels. If you have already bought a Hive kit, include its exact model rather than relying on the product name alone.

Combi, system and conventional boilers have different control arrangements. Some installations use straightforward switching; others rely on manufacturer-specific communication or additional zones. We check what will be retained or lost before changing controls, rather than assuming a new thermostat will preserve every existing function.

Fitting or replacing the receiver

The receiver provides the wired connection between the heating system and the wireless thermostat. We inspect the existing connections, establish the required switching arrangement and isolate the relevant supplies before work begins. An old receiver backplate is not automatically suitable for a replacement, even when the casing looks familiar.

Where a previous thermostat or programmer is being removed, its wiring must be dealt with correctly so it cannot prevent a heating demand or leave conflicting controls active. We then test a call for heat and check that the boiler stops when the demand is satisfied.

Thermostat position, hub and app

A thermostat beside a radiator, in direct sunlight or in a draught can misread the comfort level elsewhere. We discuss a representative position with a reliable wireless connection, keeping it clear of heat sources and avoiding places routinely covered by curtains or furniture.

Where the selected Hive equipment uses a hub for connected features, we check its connection and pairing alongside the thermostat and receiver. You will need access to your own account and home network. We demonstrate local temperature adjustment as well as the app, so everyday heating control is clear.

Hot water and heat pump controls

With a hot water cylinder, scheduling must work alongside the cylinder thermostat, valves and existing safety controls. A heating-only receiver cannot simply take over a separate hot water channel. A combi boiler normally heats tap water on demand, so cylinder scheduling is not relevant to that arrangement.

Heat pumps need particular care. Their weather compensation, water temperatures and operating strategy may depend on dedicated controls. We assess compatibility before proposing Hive and may recommend keeping the manufacturer's controller. Adding a simple on/off demand without checking the design can undermine how the system operates.

When an existing Hive system misbehaves

Tell us whether the fault affects the app, thermostat display, receiver or actual heating. Useful clues include recent broadband changes, replaced batteries, power interruptions and whether local control still works. Avoid removing covers or altering wiring yourself.

We separate connectivity issues from heating faults, including failed demands, incorrect schedules and hot water settings. Once the cause is established, we explain whether adjustment, reconnection, receiver replacement or a separate boiler investigation is appropriate.

Hive Thermostat Installation and Replacement questions

Can a Hive thermostat work with my boiler?

Many boiler systems can use suitable Hive controls, but we check the exact boiler, existing wiring, zones and receiver first. Manufacturer-specific controls may provide functions that a simple switching thermostat does not retain.

My Hive thermostat will not connect to the hub, what now?

Check batteries and the normal hub and router connections using the product instructions. Note which device is offline and whether local heating control works. Do not open the receiver or alter wiring; persistent faults need investigation.

Can you replace an old wired thermostat with a smart one?

Often, yes. We assess the wiring and control arrangement, deal with redundant connections safely and test the receiver and thermostat together. The replacement must suit both heating and any separate hot water controls.
