Boiler banging noise: what each type of bang means

A bang from a boiler falls into two families. There is the single sharp bang at the moment of ignition, and there is the repeated knocking or thudding that happens partway through a cycle. They have different causes and different levels of urgency, and telling them apart is the most useful thing you can do before picking up the phone.

One rule applies to both: a boiler should light quietly. A bang at ignition, sometimes described as delayed ignition, means gas has gathered before igniting. That is not something to live with over a winter, and it is not something to investigate yourself, because it sits on the combustion side of the appliance.

A single bang when the boiler lights

If the bang happens at the exact moment the boiler starts, it is almost certainly delayed ignition. Instead of lighting immediately, the burner allows a small volume of gas to build up and then ignites all at once. Causes include partly blocked burner jets, a failing ignition electrode, an incorrect gas pressure or a restricted air supply.

Stop using the heating and hot water if the bang is loud or getting worse, and book a Gas Safe registered engineer. This is one of the few boiler noises where continuing to run the appliance is genuinely not advisable, because the underlying fault is about how gas is burning rather than about how water is moving.

Repeated knocking during a cycle

A rhythmic knock or thud that builds up while the boiler runs is usually water and metal rather than gas. Rapid expansion of pipework as very hot water surges through it makes copper move against clips, joists and floorboards, and the result is a series of thuds that seem to travel through the house.

Overheating from poor circulation produces something similar. When flow through the heat exchanger is restricted by sludge, an airlock or a slow pump, localised boiling creates steam bubbles that collapse violently. That is closer to the rumbling of kettling than to a true bang, but on a badly affected system it can be loud enough to be described as banging.

  • Note whether the bang happens at ignition or partway into the cycle.
  • Note whether it is a single bang or a repeated knock.
  • Check whether radiators are heating evenly, since poor flow causes overheating noise.
  • Check pressure cold, which should usually sit between 1 and 1.5 bar.
  • Turn the heating off and call us if the bang is at ignition.

Water hammer, and why it is often not the boiler

A hard bang when a tap or an appliance shuts off is water hammer in the plumbing, not a boiler fault. Washing machines and dishwashers with fast solenoid valves are frequent culprits, and the bang is the mains water column stopping abruptly. It happens to be loudest near the boiler in many houses simply because that is where the pipework is densest.

Fixes here are plumbing rather than gas: proper clipping, an arrestor fitted where the appliance connects, or reducing an unnecessarily high mains pressure. If your bang only ever happens when something turns off rather than when the boiler fires, this is the trail to follow.

Older Borders properties and expansion noise

Stone built houses and converted farm properties across the Borders often have heating pipes routed through tight notches in old joists, boxed into thick walls or run under floorboards that were never lifted again. There is nowhere for copper to move as it heats, so ordinary expansion becomes an audible bang.

It is genuinely fixable, but it is joinery and pipework rather than an appliance repair. Easing notches, adding proper clips with rubber isolation and lowering flow temperature slightly all reduce the movement that causes the noise, and lower flow temperatures make a condensing boiler more efficient as a bonus.

The line between homeowner and Gas Safe work

You can safely bleed radiators, check pressure, look at flow temperature settings and identify where in the house a noise is loudest. All of that is useful and none of it involves the appliance internals.

Anything past the casing is Gas Safe work by law, and that includes burners, electrodes, gas valves, flues and heat exchangers. If the noise is at ignition, that is exactly where the fault lies, so there is no homeowner step to attempt first.

Is a banging boiler dangerous?
A bang at ignition should be treated as urgent, because it means gas is building before it lights. Knocking caused by pipe expansion or water hammer is a nuisance rather than a danger, but it still points at poor circulation or pipework that deserves attention.
Should I turn the boiler off if it bangs when it lights?
Yes. Switch the heating and hot water off and arrange a Gas Safe engineer. Delayed ignition is one of the few boiler noises where continuing to run the appliance is not advisable, and the fault sits inside the sealed combustion side.
What is the difference between banging and kettling?
Kettling is a rumbling or whistling like a boiling kettle, caused by limescale or sludge in the heat exchanger. Banging is either a single sharp ignition noise or a mechanical knock from pipework. Different causes, and kettling is rarely urgent while ignition banging is.
Can bleeding radiators stop the banging?
It can help if the noise comes from poor circulation caused by trapped air, because clearing air lets the boiler move heat away properly. It will make no difference at all to an ignition bang or to water hammer from an appliance shutting off.
