Water Softener and Scale Control Installation

We install water softeners and scale-control equipment matched to your supply, your household demand and the appliances you want to protect. Before choosing a unit we check flow, drain access and cupboard space, and we agree which taps stay unsoftened.

Softener or scale control?

They are not the same thing. A salt-regenerated softener changes the water, while scale-control equipment reduces how much limescale is deposited. We compare both against what you actually need, whether that is protecting a boiler and cylinder, cutting down on cleaning, or both.

What we check first

Sizing and position depend on the property:

  • Incoming flow and peak household use
  • A suitable drain and safe overflow route
  • Space for the unit and an accessible bypass
  • Boiler and cylinder warranty terms

Drinking water and outside taps

Softened water only goes to the kitchen tap if you ask for it. Many installations keep an unsoftened drinking-water branch, and outside taps can stay unsoftened too. We discuss this at the start so the bypasses are arranged on purpose rather than discovered after installation.

Where hard water causes problems

Limescale shows up first as white deposits on taps, shower heads and glass, but the more expensive damage is out of sight. Scale on heat exchangers, cylinder coils and appliance elements reduces efficiency and shortens their life. That is why we look at what you want to protect, such as a new boiler, an unvented cylinder or kitchen appliances, before recommending equipment.

If you are having a new boiler or cylinder fitted, it is sensible to consider water treatment at the same time, so the protection is in place from day one and any warranty conditions are met.

Our guide to hard water and limescale explains the signs to look for and the simple cleaning you can do yourself. Kitchen taps, dishwashers and washing machines benefit too, which is why we ask about the appliances in your home before choosing a unit.

Installation and handover

Equipment is connected with service valves, drain and overflow, and set up for your household. Before we leave, we show you regeneration, salt, bypass use and basic maintenance.

A new unit reduces future scale, but it will not remove limescale already built up in pipes or appliances. Those deposits may need separate cleaning or a replacement part. We are based in Kelso and install across the Scottish Borders and East Lothian.

Water Softeners questions

Will softened water go to the kitchen tap?

Only if requested. Many installations retain an unsoftened drinking-water branch.

Does a softener need a drain?

Salt-regenerated units do, along with a safe overflow route and accessible isolation.

Will scale control remove existing limescale?

It reduces future deposition, but existing deposits may need separate cleaning or component replacement.

Will it affect my boiler warranty?

We check boiler and cylinder warranty terms before the treatment arrangement is finalised.

Should I fit a softener with a new boiler?

It is worth considering at the same time, so the new boiler or cylinder is protected from day one and any warranty conditions are checked before treatment is chosen.

How do I look after a softener?

Keep it topped up with salt and know where the bypass is. We show you both at handover, along with basic maintenance.
