An outside drain that has filled up and stopped moving is telling you where the blockage is not. Everything upstream of a full chamber is still flowing, which means the obstruction sits at or beyond that point. Working out which chamber is full and which is clear is how a drainage problem gets solved, and it costs nothing but a torch and a few minutes.

Act reasonably quickly. A blocked drain that keeps being used will eventually back up into the lowest appliance in the house, which is usually a ground floor shower tray, a downstairs toilet or a utility room gully. Reducing water use while you investigate is the cheapest damage limitation available.

First, stop adding water

Hold off on washing machine and dishwasher cycles, baths and long showers until you know where the blockage is. Those appliances discharge a large volume quickly, and that is exactly what turns a slow drain into water coming up through a shower waste.

Then check which fixtures inside are affected. If everything in the house drains slowly, the blockage is on the shared run outside. If it is only the kitchen sink, the problem is far more likely to be fat and food waste in that branch, which is a much smaller job.

Find out which chamber is full

Lift the covers on the inspection chambers you can reach, working from the house outwards. A chamber running clear tells you the blockage is downstream of it. The first chamber you find standing full is where to concentrate, because the obstruction is between that chamber and the next one along.

Lift covers carefully, keep children and pets away from an open chamber, and never enter one. Wear gloves and wash thoroughly afterwards, because foul drainage carries genuine health risks.

  • Work outwards from the house to find the first full chamber.
  • Note whether rainwater and foul drainage are separate, which is common on newer estates.
  • Look for the obvious: wet wipes, cooking fat, leaves, silt and root intrusion.
  • Photograph what you find, which helps whoever attends.
  • Replace every cover securely before you leave the area.

What you can safely clear yourself

A gully choked with leaves, silt and grease at the surface can be cleared by hand with gloves and a bucket, and that alone resolves a fair share of slow outside drains, especially in autumn. A set of drain rods used gently from a chamber towards the blockage will shift soft obstructions such as paper and wipes.

Rod carefully and always turn rods clockwise so joints do not unscrew and leave a section stuck in the pipe. Do not use force on a blockage that will not move, because a rod pushed hard into a cracked clay pipe can make a repair into an excavation.

What not to do

  • Do not pour caustic drain chemicals into a chamber that is already full, since they sit there and do nothing while creating a hazard.
  • Do not use a pressure washer into an open pipe, which sprays contaminated water back at you.
  • Do not lift a cover you cannot lift safely, or enter a chamber for any reason.
  • Do not keep running appliances while a blockage is unresolved.
  • Do not ignore repeated blockages in the same place, because that is a structural symptom.

When repeated blockages mean something else

A drain that blocks in the same place every few months is not a hygiene problem, it is usually a defect. Root intrusion from a nearby tree, a displaced joint, a partially collapsed clay section or a fall that is too shallow will all catch solids repeatedly no matter how carefully the household behaves.

Older properties around Kelso and the wider Borders often have original salt glazed clay runs with rigid joints, which are exactly the conditions where roots find a way in. A camera survey settles it, and it means the repair happens once rather than every spring.

Know where responsibility sits

Drainage inside your boundary is normally your responsibility, while shared and public sewers beyond it are not. If a blockage clearly sits on a shared run affecting several properties, it is worth checking with your water authority before commissioning work, because that call can save you the cost entirely.

If sewage is escaping, entering the property or affecting a neighbour, treat it as an emergency rather than a weekend job. That is the point to phone rather than to keep rodding.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my outside drain full of water?
Because a blockage sits at or beyond that chamber, so waste water cannot flow away. Everything upstream is still working, which is why finding the first full chamber tells you exactly which section of pipe to concentrate on.
Can I clear a blocked outside drain myself?
Often yes for soft blockages. Clearing surface debris from a gully by hand with gloves, and gentle rodding from a chamber towards the obstruction, resolves many cases. Stop if the blockage will not move, because force can damage older clay pipework.
Do drain unblocking chemicals work outside?
Rarely, and they are not a good idea in a chamber that is already standing full. The chemical simply dilutes and sits there while creating a splash hazard for whoever works on the drain next. Physical clearing is more effective and safer.
Why does my drain keep blocking in the same spot?
Repeat blockages in one place usually indicate a defect rather than misuse: root intrusion, a displaced joint, a partial collapse or insufficient fall. A camera survey identifies it so the repair is done once instead of every few months.
Is a blocked drain an emergency?
It becomes one when waste water is backing up into the house, escaping at ground level or affecting a neighbouring property. Slow drainage with no backing up can usually wait for a booked visit, but reduce water use in the meantime.
